The New Neutrals: Nude Eyewear for Fall 2014

7:00 AM

Eyewear has had one thing hold true the last few years: big and bold. Whether it was oversized geek chic frames or bright blasts of color, glasses were all about making a statement.  So this season's trend took me a bit by surprise: neutrals are back in a big way.  Whether you prefer your frame to be metal or plastic, soft browns and pale peaches are the color of choice.  Here's a look at what's trending:

Round sunglasses are a major trend of 2014, and nothing brings the look into Fall/Winter 2014 like a nude frame.  This look was a street style captured during Australian Fashion Week.  The great thing about nude glasses is that they go with everything -- since they are the ultimate neutral you can pair with blacks, blues, browns, and patterns.  If you are pattern mixing in your outfit (here mixing two stripes) then you don't want a competing color or pattern in your eyewear.
Another real focal point of the season is the bold, retro inspired shapes that designers are offering.  If you are attempting statement shapes like round or octagonal that are popping up, then you want to keep a neutral palette in the color of your glasses to let that shape make the visual impact.  via

For ophthalmics, metals are really making a comeback after years of domination by oversized plastics.  If you want to be on trend in metals, don't go with old school silver or gold.  The new metals are matte finish, and these nude glasses from Bobbi Brown Eyewear are a great example of how a fashion-forward color can make all the difference in updating a basic shape.  The above frame is The Mallory in Solid Nude via

And nude frames aren't just for 2014.  They were all over the Spring/Summer 2015 runways too.  The above are from French label Pret a Porter via

The Holy Grail of Fall 2014 Sunglasses: a cat-eye two tone fade that changes from nude to clear.    I couldn't have designed it better myself.  If you want the ultimate pair of sunglasses for the next few seasons, use this pair of glasses as your guide.  These are Thierry Lasry Deeply Sunglasses in Taupe via

A word for caution: nudes can be really challenging to wear if the color matches your skin tone too closely.  A great way to break up the look so that the glasses don't match your face is to incorporate a darker tone fade. via
